Vodka, lasers, trance and speed limits in Czech Republic
27 May 2010
Did you know there is Vodka brand called “Helsinki Vodka”? Neither did I, but there is a such brand and it’s made in Czech Republic! I found this out during my debut gig in Czech Republic last weekend. I also found out that Czech people are very very friendly, they love trance music and when they come to club they really like to dance full on, not just hang around and nod their heads a bit. And as often in Eastern Europe the club had a proper laser system which was shooting directly to the people which is something we don’t have here in Finland.
I was playing in the city of Brno (they’ve never been too much into vocals in Eastern Europe;) which seems to have a solid trance scene as Jochen Miller was playing on the same date in Brno. The venue was a nice and comfy 300-400 capacity club located next to the local football stadium. I was wondering if this the closest to stadium gigs I will get? =D One of the promoters Libor was doing the warm up with some nice progressive trance. The track which got the floor properly going was Ali Wilson’s Pandora which currently seems to be THE trance anthem of summer 2010. I played a two hour set of melodic progressive house and progressive trance with lots of finnish and own stuff. I also roadtested the new Andy Moor vs Orkidea and Solarstone vs Orkidea collaborations and the 2010 mixes of Slusnik Luna’s Sun and my Unity. All seemed to do the damage. One local clubber called my style “space trance” which I really liked. Sci-fi films have always been inspiration to me anyway. You can the full tracklist of my set at the Charts & Playlists section of my site: http://www.djorkidea.com/2010/05/dj-orkidea-soulgate-21052010/.
The other main DJ/promoter Mase continued after me with some banging techy sound which seemed to go down well. The only real downside of the trip was that the party ended at 05am and my flight was from Vienna at 10am so no much sleep… Getting to the airport on time required some “relaxed interpretation” of speed limits;) And what about the Helsinki Vodka..? Well it was pretty harsh tasting but seemed to unite the Czech and Finnish trance nations happily:)

Radio Unity 017 tonight
19 May 2010
Tonight’s Radio Unity has a definite summery vibe going on. There is some amazing progressive trance around at the moment and there were lots of great tracks to choose from.
Artists like Henry Saiz, Eelke Kleijn, Funkagenda and Protoculture have cemented their place in the current world map of electronic dance music and are coming up with the goods almost every month. Andy Moor and Way Out West represent more veteran producers. There are two fresh remixes of classics: a wicked prog trance version of Sasha & Emerson’s 2000 classic ‘Scorchio’ and a progressive psytrance version of Binary Finary’s ‘1998′.
Finnish trance sound is represented by myself and the always-so-reliable Allende. I’m happy that I can finally play my breakz trance remix of Alex MORPH’s ‘Purple Audio’ which was recently released on Paul van Dyk’s Vandit label. The mix has been ready well over a year but has been waiting for airplay to ensure freshness when released. I’ll be joining the chat at the Afterhours.fm forum and hope you’ll join some likeminded music lovers too.

JACK Closing Party at Redrum (review)
18 May 2010
Time flies when you’re having fun I guess..? At least it seems like the JACK opening night at Redrum was only a while ago. Yet it’s been 1 1/2 years since I played my first jackin’ beats with that Funktion One system. Since then we’ve had only packed nights with some amazing local and foreign talents bringing their vibe to JACK.
I’ve seen quite a few “closing parties” during my career yet it’s always surprising how the emotions catch you during the last night. It was great to see so many new and old friends came and partied with us. It’s been nice to see JACK both a) have lots of the old school faces from Kerma/Rose/Kutonen still coming to jack their bodies and b) gather a new regular and super up-for-it crowd during this Redrum period.
WE decided to have the first ever JACK classics night with myself, Peled Bros and Orion all playing our favorite house/techno/prog tracks from the past eight (or so) years. Peleds and Juska did a super fine job with getting the party started perhaps sooner than ever before and also balancing nicely between Peled’s deeper housey grooves and Juska’s more pumping approach. Both were equally appreciated judging by the amount of hands in the air. My own faves from those 3 1/2 hours were Cosmos’ Take Me With You’, Joris Voorn’s ‘Sweep The Floor’ and Laurent Garbier’s ‘Man With Red Face’. Anthems with capital A I’d say!
In my own set I wanted to flick through the many different shades of house music that JACK represents: very old school classics, jackin’ filter house, progressive house, nu skool techno, electro house and what not. It’s been always about diversity, underground vibe and fun times without any serious attitudes. It’s hard to pick just one highlight so pls check the tracklist from the tracklist section of my site. I also wanted to make a tiny statement and end with something very new and fresh in form of Tensnake’s ‘Comacat’. Anthem of the summer 2010 anyone?
We have also made new, limited edition JACK-shirts with Oded Peled’s concept idea, Jani Tolin’s print design with handmade Bali quality. They seemed to be a hit with tens of them flying from the DJ booth. I must also say that LJs Tea & Severi were in fine form while our decoration sensei Markus Friskberg’s idea of putting the decorations upside down “because people will anyway feel like that at the end of the night” so great cheeky idea.
So, here we are: homeless and approaching the age of eight. There are some future plans, but more of those… in the future;) BIG thanks to everybody who came last Saturday and on any of the nights at Redrum. YOU made nights special. Thank You.
