BT: A Million Stars One of the best picks from BT’s new album ‘These Hopeful Machines’. Apparently this was originally written by Kirsty Hawkshaw and Ulrich Schnauss (!) and co-produced by Sultan & Ned Shepard. You can’t go wrong with that combo! Crazy how groovy, emotional and well produced this 12 minute masterpiece is!
Ashley Wallbridge: Chimera With Ashley’s pace of putting tracks out this already feels like an “old track” by now=D One of his best tracks so far. I know not everybody is fan of the more bass heavy and groovy trance sound but Ashley is surely one of the best talents with that. Personally I think it’s been a fresh change to trance but needs to be balanced with more rolling stuff all the time. I think Ashley’s tricks are also continuation of trick-heavy style started originally by the likes of BT, Hybrid, Way Out West and Andy Moor.
Bart Van Wissen: Cosmic Superhero Another prime example of the forementioned bass heavy and groovy style. This time the lead melody reminds me somehow of ‘Greece 2000′ in it’s all simplicity. This is perfect early set material for a trance set but could be a peak time anthem at my prog night JACK. Bart’s style is also IMO all the time developing better and more mature.
Der Dritte Raum: Hale Bopp (Guy J remix) This was a Sasha/Digweed exclusive for a long time. Very nice unofficial remix by israelian DJ/producer Guy J of Der Dritte Raum’s alltime classic ‘Hale Bopp’. Nothing beats the original but this comes close to the old Nick Warren/Starecase remix and is nicely updated and brought to today. That being said I’m amazed how contemporary the original mix still sounds! It’s also one of the most versatile records which fits trance, prog, techno and tech house sets.
Jaia: Out Of Orbit (Vibrasphere Analog Tape Remix) Now moving into more trancey territory… My favorite producers of recent years - the unbelievably talented swedes Vibrasphere bring 8 minutes of retrofuturistic progressive psy-trance. They have such a warm and atmospheric sound yet rolling enough for dancefloor. More music like this please! =)
Rank 1 & Jochen Miller: The Great Escape Two (or should I say three?) heavyweights join forces and they deliver one of the best big room trancers for a while. The main riff reminds me quite a lot of the Rank 1 remix of Cygnus X’s ‘Superstring’ with a modern twist. This is very full on yet with some edge in it. You can hear Rank 1’s been around for a long with an underlying old school techno vibe being present in many of their productions.
Faithless: Sun To Me (Alex Morph remix) This Faithless remix is probably my favorite Alex Morph production so far. FAT bassline and some techy vibe combined with that catchy Faithless riff. Also nice to see Alex keeping tempo down in 132 bpm! The Jerome Isma’ae remix of ‘Sun To Me’ is also very very good. It seems that Sister Bliss, Maxi Jazz and Rollo have “released themselves from major label restraints” and will release their upcoming album (out late May) by themselves. Very much looking forward to it!
Mansun: Wide Open Space (Greg Downey remix) This has been around for ages and Greg said this might get an official release during this year. I love the original Perfecto mix from 1998 which used to be a big Oakenfold Cream tune. This is a nice uplifting trance remix using the vocal well. Deserves a release for sure!
Solarstone: Solarcoaster (Haris C Remix) Big room classic remixes are the theme of the end part of this set=) This is another one that’s been waiting for a release for ages. Rich Solarstone has been caning this for well over a year in his sets. Haric C definitely has lots of energy in his remixes. Some kind of Paul van Dyk ‘99 vibe perhaps..? This one is originally 140 bpm which is a bit too much for me but works nicely at 136 thanks to modern technology. Btw, the collaboration between me and Rich should be coming out on his forthcoming new artist album. The pieces I’ve heard on it sound very promising!
BT: Flaming June (Randy Boyer Mix) BT is legend enough to deserve two tracks in one show! The original is one of my alltime favorite tracks and blew the place up during the last hours of my 23 hour set on New Year’s Day. This remix is by US based Randy Boyer aka EnMass. Closing tracks don’t get bigger than this so this was it=)
