The less known b-side of Union Jack’s classic ‘Two Full Moons & A Trout’. Love the hypnotic vibe of this and even if it sounds laidback at home from proper sound system it kicks ass! This brings the legendary finnish Botta/Berlin club from 1993 to my mind with DJs Jokke and Ender playing the early german trance sound every Saturday. It was an honour to me to remix TFMAAT for Platipus last year.
Sven Väth and Ralf Hildenbeutel were making some truly amazing trance records back then and alongside Sven’s own solo albums this is one of the best ones. Released on Väth’s Harthouse label. That melody and bass have something so simple rawness in them that I find very interesting and hard to find in today’s super poli
DJ Dag and Jam El Mar were some of the key producers of the first wave of trance in 1991-1993. Their debut album is still sounding (and feeling) awesome. Hello San Francisco was a power play track at our Q-Club in 1993. Perfect sound for the early morning hours with handful of people dancing in middle of smoke machine smoke with sun rising through the blocked windows.
Another classic from Sven Väth’s labels this time from THE ultime trance label of all time Eye Q. Now when I think of it was clear that the fact that all Eye Q’s key producers where highly talented, creative, experienced and professional producers made it so succesful. They were no bedroom producers learning while doing but skilled pros already back then and you can hear than in the high quality of the tracks. So many timeless classics made by Hildenbeutel, Mathias Hoffman and AC Boutsen.
Oakenfold’s Goa Mixes on BBC Radio 1 and Dragonfly mix CD 1 broke the whole genre over night in UK and Europe. This track together with Man With No Name’s Teleport and Sugar Rush are still my favorite psy trance tracks. It’s been refreshing to hear some same (yet updated) vibes coming back during the last couple years.
Another classic from Q-Club. Pete Namlook who is more know for his ambient/electronica shows how to do some timeless trance. That melody is still very catchy in all it’s simplicity. And the track is second to none in it’s non-dj-friendliness. Kind of hit-to-a-brickwall ending=D
So melancholic yet filled with hope. One of the most beautiful trance tracks of all time to me. And once again simple things work as well as the complex ones. And this is of course just one of the many many Oliver Lieb masterpieces. I read he suffers from Insomnia which is not nice but makes him work like crazy…
This was probably Humate’s most uplifting track when remixing another Oliver Lieb classic on Rising High Records. Quite unique drum programming and bassline but flows nicely. If you haven’t heard the original Lieb version I highly recommend checking them out. Well over 140 bpm though but that was the name of the game back then;) This used to be my power play at Maa Club which was our next illegal UG club after Q. Once again proper morning trance…
Yet another Eye Q classic. Close to 150 bpm in it’s original speed. I remember that I started my first ever radio mix (live of course as they used to be back then) at Helsinki Radio City with this back in 1994. Radio City even broadcast one of our illegal night raves live! Which feels odd nowadays when the channel has turned into a beer’n'rock’n'hockey type of mainstream channel… And the track itself is building on a very simple yet growing theme. Sunrise mix indeed as this was often played around 8am or so.
An early Sasha & Digweed Renaissance classic. More UK sound building a bridge between the UK progressive house sound and the german trance sound. Actually I would have liked to play the very original Vangelis track but this fitted the mix more smoothly:) And who would be better match to close the old school trance mix than Vangelis - one of the very original creators and innovators. Who btw believes heavily into improvisation and has built his synth kit so that he can play live everything that he does. Often even without any crystal clear plan. Here is a rare interview of him:

Moi,
Jälleen kerran aivan tappohyvää settiä. Meinasin välillä pillahtaa itkuun, kun tulvi muistoja mieleen kultaiselta 90 luvulta.
